San Francisco Cosmetic Dentist Reviews The Properties Of Resin and Porcelain Respectively

by | Date Published:

Over the years, the materials that we use in restorative dentistry have only continued to advance: delivering exceptional aesthetic results while being able to stand up to the daily wear and tear of life.

Today, our San Francisco dentists are reviewing the relative properties of two commonly used materials in cosmetic and restorative dentistry: porcelain and dental resin. As you read through this short article, we hope that you get a better idea of what type of treatment and material may be right for you.

Dental resin is an incredibly versatile restorative material that can be customized in any number of ways to suit the individual patient’s needs. Initially, composite resin is soft and malleable, so it can be shaped appropriately. When dental resin is used in composite bonding, for example, our dental team will apply the resin and shape it as needed. Then, we cure the resin so that it hardens and bonds to the natural dental structure. Once resin is cured, it is hard and non-porous.

When we use porcelain to restore teeth, we completely craft the restoration prior to placing it on the tooth. Porcelain is used to create restorative crowns as well exceptionally thin aesthetic veneers. Because porcelain naturally mimics the appearance of real enamel, porcelain restorations blend in seamlessly with existing teeth. Porcelain is naturally stain resistant and non-porous. Because porcelain restorations are crafted prior to being placed, it generally takes two to three appointments to complete this type of treatment.

Both composite resin and porcelain restorations are designed to stand up to wear and tear. However, sometimes despite our best efforts damage does occur. Keep in mind that dental bonding can be repaired, while porcelain restorations need to be replaced if damaged.

There are a number of important factors to keep in mind when considering dental bonding or porcelain restorations. Our San Francisco cosmetic dentists are here to help you weigh all of your options and restore your smile in a way that works for you. Give us a call to get started!
