If you are missing teeth, you may have already run across the dental implant as a potential restorative treatment for this issue. Dental implants have helped patients of many ages regain healthy and whole smiles after tooth loss.

Today our San Francisco dentist is answering commonly asked questions about dental implants. Let’s get started!

Q: How is a dental implant different than other replacement teeth?

A: The thing that sets the dental implant apart is that it actually has a replacement tooth root, along with the replacement dental crown. Every stand-alone dental implant has a titanium root that extends into the patient’s bone tissue—this titanium screw is the replacement tooth root! As you’d imagine, this replacement root holds the dental implant in place permanently—offering the patient exceptional stability and peace of mind.

Q: But I have more than one missing tooth—can dental implants work for me?

A: There are a number of ways to use dental implants in order to replace multiple teeth. You could conceivably have an individual dental implant placed for each of your missing teeth—provided that you have adequate jawbone tissue, we can place as many dental implants as you need. If you have multiple missing teeth right in a row, you may also be able to use an implant-fixed denture; this is a denture that is permanently grounded into the patient’s smile with a few strategically placed implant roots.

Q: How long does it take to complete dental implant treatment?

A: This depends on exactly what treatments you pursue. If you have receive stand-alone full sized dental implants, we will first place the implant root, then allow the incision site to heal for a few weeks to two months, and then we’ll attach the final restoration on top. If you use mini implant roots—which are commonly used to secure dentures—it generally takes only a few days for your roots to be inserted an to be fully functional.

Dental implant technology has opened a number of exciting doors for patients who are suffering from tooth loss. If you want to learn more about all of your restorative dentistry options, including dental implants, please call our San Francisco dentists to get started!
