When it comes to visiting your San Francisco dentist, there are the routine reasons, which include things like dental cleanings every six months and perhaps the occasional filling or crown, but there are also cosmetic reasons to visit a dentist like Dr. Robert M. Walley. The first time anyone comes into contact with you, they are almost certain to notice your smile, but if your smile is lacking in any way, cosmetic dentistry exists to help it sparkle like it should.

If you feel like you're in need of a smile makeover, Dr. Walley can provide you with any of the following four options to help correct whatever problems you may feel like you have.

#1 Teeth Whitening

There are a number of reasons that teeth can become stained, ranging from the consumption of stain-causing beverages like coffee and cola, to a lifetime of smoking, to less common things like medication side effects. Whatever the reason, discolored teeth aren’t something you have to live with, as there are safe, painless whitening procedures that can remove staining and make every tooth gleam and glisten exactly like it’s supposed to.

#2 Invisalign

Literally millions of people in the United States have invested in orthodontic care at some point in their lives because they didn’t want to live with teeth that either could not comfortably chew or that looked so crooked as to lose some of their aesthetic appeal. Invisalign is a fast, low-maintenance way to correct some of those issues, and it doesn’t fill your mouth with metal like typical braces do.

#3 Veneers

Built from porcelain or composite resin, dental veneers are basically thin shells bonded to the front of teeth to change their shape, length, size, or color. It is easy to understand why these would be desirable to certain patients with chipped, damaged, discolored, or oddly-sized teeth, and the good news is that they aren’t an invasive procedure. They can be done in just one or two visits and don’t require any special care once they have been put into place.

#4 Dental Implants

In rare cases, patients require complete dental reconstruction. This occurs when patients have seriously damaged teeth or even teeth that have fallen out completely, leaving gaps in their smile. When this happens, it can be easy to feel a lack of self-confidence in the way your smile presents itself, but thanks to dental implants, which look and feel exactly like real teeth, there is no gap or damage that Dr. Walley can’t fix. If you want your smile back to normal, sometimes full smile construction and dental implants are the answer you’ve been looking for.

High-quality pediatric dental care can set the patient up for a healthy smile well into adulthood. Today, our San Francisco dentists are sharing information about helping children develop healthy dental habits.

  1. Good habits start early

Research has shown that young patients who have positive, consistent dental experiences are more likely to carry healthy habits into adulthood. Think of it this way: your children can practice proper dental hygiene techniques on primary teeth, before permanent adult teeth even come in. Childhood is the perfect time to get your kids used to brushing twice a day, and flossing every night. Take this opportunity to teach your children about proper brushing technique—using small circular motions to buff plaque from dental enamel, and brushing for at least two minutes every morning and night.

  1. Even damage to primary teeth matters

While it is true that a child’s primary teeth will fall out at some point, it is still very important to keep them as healthy as possible for as long as possible. Remember, primary teeth are necessary in order for children to develop healthy speech patterns, and in order for them to expand their diets. Primary teeth also serve as “placeholders,” so to speak, for adult teeth; they help to ensure that there will be enough room along your gum line for permanent teeth to emerge. Additionally, infections that begin in a child’s teeth can quickly spread to oral tissues and even the jawbone.

  1. There are oral hygiene products that are just right for kids

When helping your child establish an oral hygiene routine, take the time to select the right tools for the job. Keep in mind that young children, those that are prone to swallowing toothpaste, should not use formulations that contain fluoride. There are kid-friendly toothpastes on the market that are fluoride-free. You also want to ensure that the head of the brush is small enough to reach your child’s back molars.
