There is absolutely no need to continue living with a smile that you don’t love, or that you don’t feel proud to show off. Modern dentistry offers the effective and convenient care that you need to improve dental aesthetics. Today, our San Francisco cosmetic dentists are walking you through the process of planning treatment.

  • Assessment

The first thing that our dentist will do is to complete a thorough assessment of your smile. We are looking for any existing infections or anomalous tissues, which may need to be treated prior to aesthetic treatment. The last thing that we want to do is to make your smile look perfect, while leaving underlying issues to fester and become more severe.

During your assessment, we will also talk to you about your aesthetic goals. Do you want to transform your entire smile? Focus on specific teeth? Achieve a straighter, seamless smile? Share as much information as you can so that we can tailor treatment to meet your needs.

  • Treatment Options

The next step is to give you information about the many treatment options available to you. For example, you could straighten the appearance of your smile with orthodontic treatment, or you could use restorations to make your smile appear straighter without actually moving your natural teeth. The primary considerations at this phase are your timeline, ideal budget, and post-treatment maintenance goals.

Here at the offices of Dr. Robert M. Walley, we often deal with the misconception that orthodontics are only for teenagers, and we understand why. For generations now, people have only ever seen braces in the mouths of adolescents, at least as shown on television and in movies. But the reality is that Invisalign clear braces in San Francisco can work great for adults, too. Teens aren’t the only ones with crooked teeth!

Think of it this way: an investment in orthodontics at age 40 could yield benefits that may last another 50 years. Of course, Invisalign is perhaps a better option for adults than traditional braces for the following reasons:

Five Reasons Invisalign Works So Well for Adults

#1 Invisalign is Less Noticeable

Perhaps the most important advantage for our adult orthodontic patients is the fact that Invisalign treatments are more aesthetically pleasing than traditional braces. Some adults may feel a bit silly with huge metal brackets on their teeth, but Invisalign trays are practically invisible (hence the name). If you were hoping to find an orthodontic solution that nobody even knows you’re undertaking, then this is the option for you.

#2 Invisalign Does Not Limit Diet

Another major benefit of Invisalign is that there are no dietary restrictions. With traditional braces, patients are told to avoid hard and chewy foods like nuts, popcorn, hard taco shells, sticky and hard candy, gum, pretzels, and crunchy chips. Those are some of the most fun foods to eat, and Invisalign doesn’t require a patient to skip any of them because the trays can just pop out during meals and go right back in after the patient has brushed their teeth.

#3 Invisalign Are More Comfortable

Invisalign trays align your teeth more slowly than traditional braces, which means the discomfort isn’t as severe. Furthermore, because the aligner trays are smooth, they don’t take up as much real estate in the mouth as those metal brackets do. Put simply, there are many reasons why Invisalign trays are more comfortable for adults.

#4 Invisalign Trays Are Easy to Care For

Because Invisalign trays are made from plastic, they are incredibly easy to clean. They simply pop out, allowing patients to brush and floss normally while cleaning the trays. That is better for dental health and is a whole lot easier than trying to floss between brackets and wires.

#5 Invisalign Offers Dependable Results

Patients who wear their Invisalign brackets reliably get quick, reliable results. Sometimes, teeth can be straightened in under a year! Of the people who try invisible braces in San Francisco, the overwhelming majority are happy with the results. On top of every other benefit, we know they work well!

If you think you might be interested in Invisalign as a means of straightening your teeth, contact the office of Dr. Robert M. Walley to set up an initial consultation. We will help you spend the next several decades loving your smile instead of thinking you missed the boat because you never got braces as a teen. It’s never too late for the smile you want and deserve!

Guide To Dental Bridges

Guide To Dental Bridges in San Francisco

No one wants a noticeable gap in their smile, but the reality is that there are several reasons someone could lose a tooth that creates just such a gap. Whether it’s a tooth lost to decay or trauma, it doesn’t matter; having an incomplete set of teeth can make people self-conscious about the way they look, not to mention the strain it can put on the functionality of a bite.

What is one to do if they’ve got such a gap in their own smile? One excellent option is a dental bridge, which is one of the most common options in San Francisco dentistry for this very problem. As always, Dr. Robert M. Walley is happy to be the one restoring your smile.

What is a Dental Bridge?

The concept of a dental bridge is pretty simple: Dr. Walley can make one or more false teeth for a patient as a means of “bridging” the gap between two healthy teeth. He will fashion special crowns for the healthy teeth on either side of the gap, and these abutment teeth will support the false teeth (called pontics) that fill the empty space in your smile.

Pontics are meant to look and function just like real teeth, and most people will not be able to tell the difference between them and real teeth. They can be fashioned from porcelain, alloys, or even gold. However they’re made, they’ll get your smile looking like new in no time.

What are the Benefits to Dental Bridges?

Other than restoring your smile to all its former glory, these bridges actually are important in that they help patients chew and speak normally again. Overcompensating for missing teeth can expedite damage to other healthy teeth, which is why it’s so important to distribute the force of your bite properly by ensuring all your teeth are present and accounted for.

If patients leave a gap alone for too long, it can cause a couple of problems. First, it can actually change the shape of your face. More importantly, though, that gap can allow other teeth to drift out of position, potentially putting them at higher risk of decay, which could over time cause those teeth to fall out as well. In other words, the sooner a patient has this procedure done, the sooner they can protect the healthy teeth that remain.

What is the Process for Getting a Dental Bridge?

It’s worth noting that dental bridges are not a one-visit procedure. During the first visit, Dr. Walley will prepare your abutment teeth, which will be responsible for holding the bridge in place. He also will take impressions of other teeth to construct the pontics that will serve as the bridge. You’ll get a temporary bridge while your permanent teeth are being manufactured in the lab.

Your second visit will involve removing the temporary bridge and installing the permanent one. It is possible further visits will be necessary to fine-tune the fit, but that depends entirely on the individual case. Once everyone is happy with the bridge’s fit and function, Dr. Walley will permanently cement the bridge into place.

If you have a gap in your smile that you’d like repaired, consider investing in some of the nicest-looking replacement teeth in San Francisco by setting up an appointment at the office of Dr. Robert M. Walley. He can get your smile looking great again with a procedure that can literally change the way you speak, chew, and smile on an everyday basis.
